A couple of weeks ago, we talked about how 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Martz had a feeling that J.T. O’Sullivan could be the best quarterback he’s ever coached. For about three weeks, it looked like Martz might have been on to something. Then, all of a sudden, O’Sullivan started playing like a guy who had been a member of eight teams in six years. There was even talk that he might be in danger of taking a seat on the bench in favor of backup Shaun Hill.
Despite O’Sullivan’s recent struggles, and the rumors of his possible benching, Martz still believes in his starting quarterback. From Matt Maiocco of the Still, Martz would not think of replacing O’Sullivan with backup quarterback Shaun Hill. “J.T. is going to be an outstanding player in this league,” Martz said. “He’s on his way. I’m not displeased with him in any sense, and I think he’s going to be fine. But he’s not where he needs to be, but we’re going to get him there as quickly as we can.”Even though O’Sullivan is a sixth-year player in the NFL, he’s essentially a rookie in terms of actual playing experience, so some struggles are to be expected. Especially when he’s getting sacked more than any other quarterback in the NFL.
Still, I don’t think he has a bigger fan in the NFL than Martz. Which is kind funny, seeing as how Martz has a history of making his quarterbacks feel less than stellar.
