ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. Fresh off his best game of the season, Trent Edwards endured nothing but frustration against the 49ers.
The former Los Gatos High and Stanford star struggled through a groin injury on Sunday and spent the second half on the Buffalo sideline.
That left him as a spectator for a 10-3 loss, as J.P. Losman finished up.
"Pull, strain, whatever you want to call it, it's still just nagging me right now,'' Edwards said. "It's unfortunate. It's frustrating, and I need to get in the training room and get better."
Edwards said his groin bothered him from the start then got progressively worse with each hit. A rollout near the end of the first half finished his day.
He had an appointment scheduled for 8:30 a.m. today with Bills team doctors to evaluate the extent of the injury.
"As of right now, I have no idea,'' Edwards said, when asked about playing next week.
Edwards wasn't a 49ers fan growing up in the Bay Area. He won't be one now, either, as San Francisco delivered a big blow to the Bills' playoff hopes.
In one half of play, Edwards completed 10 of 21 passes for 112 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions.
Overall, the 49ers held Buffalo without a touchdown during four trips inside the red zone.
"That's the difference in the game right there,'' Edwards said.
The Bills had second-and-goal at the 49ers 2-yard line. But Edwards' second-down pass to third tight end Derek Fine just missed the mark, as the play was defended by Kentwan Balmer.
"That was a play we just put in late in the week, and we were down to one second on the play clock,'' Edwards said. "The defensive tackle made a great play of just batting it down."
Big day for Lynch
Another Bills player with Bay Area connections, former Cal and Oakland Tech running back Marshawn Lynch, enjoyed a better day with a season-high 134 rushing yards on 16 carries.
Lynch had a 50-yard run in the third quarter for his longest run of the season. He came up 9 yards short of the goal line when he was slowed trying to elude cornerback Walt Harris, and 49ers linebacker Takeo Spikes caught him from behind.
"I had to punch it overdrive,'' Spikes said.
Clements back in Buffalo
Nate Clements, who played for the Bills from 2001-06, fared fine in his homecoming. He played solid defense in his primary matchup against Lee Evans and finished the day with six tackles.
Clements also lined up as the 49ers' punt returner in the absence of Allen Rossum (ankle). Clements, who has plenty of experience playing in foul weather, said the key "is to block out everything." Could he even block out the boos?
"I did hear that,'' he said with a laugh. "But deep down, I know they love me."
Hill efficient
49ers quarterback Shaun Hill had an efficient day, completing 14 of 23 passes for 161 yards and a touchdown. He was sacked three times, but one was essentially on purpose. With 2:19 to play, Hill accepted an 11-yard loss because doing so allowed more time to run off the clock.
"You throw (an incomplete pass) to a tightly covered receiver, and the clock stops. If I run out of bounds, the clock stops,'' Hill said. "That's why I took the sack."
Extra points
Chris Hannon was on the active roster but did not play, a day after being signed from the practice squad. The 49ers promoted the former of University of Tennessee receiver because of injuries to receiver Josh Morgan (groin) and Arnaz Battle (foot). To make room for Hannon on the roster, the 49ers released linebacker Ahmad Brooks, who had been inactive for the previous 11 games. ... Isaac Bruce caught career touchdown pass No. 90. He needs 10 more to pass Don Hutson (1935-44) for eighth on the all-time list. Jerry Rice is the all-time leader with 197 receiving touchdowns. ... 49ers tight end Vernon Davis had zero catches. He had a 37-yard touchdown nullified in the third quarter when he was flagged for offensive pass interference. ... Since 2004, the 49ers were just 3-27 in games that start at 10 a.m. West Coast time. ... The 49ers reported no significant injuries. Linebacker Patrick Willis suffered a minor rib injury but returned to the game.
