SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) - The San Francisco 49ers extended the contracts of linebacker Parys Haralson and kicker Joe Nedney on Thursday after strong seasons by both players.
Haralson received a four-year extension through 2013, and Nedney agreed to a two-year extension through 2011.
Haralson emerged as the 49ers' top pass-rusher last season, getting eight sacks despite playing only sparingly in the season's early games. The former fifth-round pick, who finished fifth among NFL linebackers in sacks, was eager to cement his future with coach Mike Singletary and the Niners' 3-4 defense, which highly values pass-rushing linebackers.
"It was a priority because I'm basically excited about the direction the team is going, and excited about what Coach Singletary is doing with the team," Haralson said. "I like it out here, and I'm just excited to be here for an extended amount of time."
Nedney had another steady season for the 49ers, improving to 101-of-115 on field goal attempts since joining the club in 2005. The former San Jose State kicker is the 42nd-leading scorer in NFL history.
San Francisco had ample salary cap room to add the contract extensions. The club also has talked to two-time Pro Bowl linebacker Patrick Willis, already signed through 2010, about a long-term deal.
