Niners rookies ready to get down to business
Deep down, Michael Crabtree might well be burning with resentment at not being the first wide receiver chosen in last week's NFL Draft despite his status going in as top-ranked at his position.

Outwardly, though, Crabtree appears at peace with where he was drafted and where he ended up, chosen at No. 10 by the 49ers , three picks after the Raiders tabbed Darrius Heyward-Bey at No. 7.

"I wish the guy well," Crabtree, the new 49er , said of Heyward-Bey, the new Raider. "I'm not the type of guy that talks down about anybody. I hope he does a great job for the Raiders. They wanted and needed him, so he's a Raider.

"I found a home now. I'm a 49er . Feeling good."

Crabtree and his six fellow draftees reported to team headquarters Thursday and were promptly whisked to Stanford Hospital for physicals. Crabtree estimated it was the 35th physical exam he's had in recent weeks.

Crabtree said the repaired stress fracture in his left foot checked out well in this most recent physical, but since the surgery was in March, he will not practice with his fellow rookies in this weekend's minicamp.

"Everything is going good," he said. "Everything is healing right. I should be ready to go" by training camp.

Unlike Crabtree, running back Glen Coffee, linebacker Scott McKillop, quarterback Nate Davis, tight end Bear Pascoe, safety Curtis Taylor and defensive lineman Ricky Jean-Francois will be on the field working today and Saturday.

The camp is designed for rookies, although veterans can choose to take part in this voluntary exercise. The team's mandatory minicamp is June 5-7. Training camp begins in late July.

"The biggest thing is learning the playbook, in and out," Davis said. "I want to get that down. I don't think it's going to be hard. I don't think I have a learning disability in Football."

Davis is the Ball State quarterback who wears gloves and does not throw with the laces. He's candid about a learning disability that makes reading and writing difficult. The 49ers knew about his condition and were pleased to get him in the fifth round as a project.

"I'm a very visual learner," he said. "Reading the playbook, there's a lot of pictures. In college it took me half the year to get the playbook down and for all the ins and outs, probably 1 1/2 years. ... It's a great opportunity for me. I want to do what's best for the team. If I have to be a practice squad guy, I'll be a practice squad guy."

Coffee, McKillop and Pascoe are almost certain to make the 53-man roster and contribute as rookies. Coffee will back up Frank Gore, McKillop will do the same at inside linebacker behind Takeo Spikes, and Pascoe figures to see playing time initially as a blocking tight end.

"I think the intangibles I hopefully bring to a team are something they can use," McKillop said. "I pride myself on hard work, toughness and being a sure tackler. I don't like to make mistakes. I like to have a full understanding of the defense."

McKillop said he is looking forward to meeting one teammate in particular, a guy he could eventually be playing alongside for years to come.

"I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to meet Patrick Willis," he said. "I'm pretty excited about that. ... He's a special player. He's a complete linebacker. He's the man. I'm looking forward to learning from him, anything that can make me better."

As for Pascoe, life on a ranch near Porterville Tulare County conditioned him for the physical grind he'll have ahead of him.

"I was bucking hay, flanking calves, fixing fences," he said. "Ranch life is a real hard life. You either grow up tough or leave. I love that life. I grew up tough."

Also on Thursday, the 49ers signed linebacker Marques Harris to a one-year contract. He's a five-year veteran, who spent four years with the San Diego Chargers.
