Whereas you've probably heard a lot about Maryland receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey over the past few weeks, you likely haven't heard much about Heyward-Bey's Terps teammate, tight end Dan Gronkowski. You should get to know the latter, as he's one of the solid under-the-radar tight end prospects in this year's draft.
At 6-6, 255 pounds, Gronkowski has the size to play tight end at the next level. Considered a superb blocker, he showed off some stellar hands in '08 ACC play. After catching just 11 balls in his first three seasons in College Park, Gronkowski hauled in 29 passes three for touchdowns in his senior season. Of all the tight ends at the combine in February, Gronkowski finished with the third-best performance on the bench press and the second-best performance in the 60-yard shuttle. Scouts are impressed by his physical abilities and see him as a student of the game.
In 2006, another tight end out of Maryland blew everyone away with his speed and athletic ability. Gronkowski's a very different tight end than Vernon Davis.
That doesn't mean he won't make for a better pro.
