The San Francisco 49ers convened for their first gathering of the offseason and three notable veterans were not expected to be in attendance.

The team has informed offensive tackle Jonas Jennings that he does not fit into the 49ers' plans for the future. Jennings is still rehabilitating a shoulder injury. Once he recovers, he will be released, a 49ers source said.

Safety Mark Roman, a starter the past three seasons for the 49ers, has been given permission to seek a trade. Roman was not invited to the voluntary workouts scheduled for the weekend.

And wide receiver Isaac Bruce was not expected to attend the minicamp, as he continues to contemplate retirement. The 49ers have told Bruce to take all the time he needs to determine whether he wishes to return to the 49ers for a 16th NFL season.

Bruce was easily the most productive of those three veterans. He played his first 14 years with the Los Angeles/St. Louis Rams. In his one season with the 49ers, Bruce caught a team-leading 61 passes for 835 yards and seven touchdowns.

But Bruce began to consider retirement after coach Mike Singletary fired offensive coordinator Mike Martz, with whom Bruce enjoyed a lot of past success.

Jennings played in just two games last season. He was limited by injuries throughout his four seasons with the 49ers. Jennings was the 49ers' marquee free-agent pickup in 2005, signing a seven-year, $36 million contract.

He finished on injured reserve three of his four seasons with the 49ers. He played three games in 2005, five games in 2007 and just two games last season because of a variety of injuries.

Roman has not missed a game since the 2002 season. He has played in 48 consecutive games with the 49ers since signing as a free agent during training camp in 2006.

While Roman was seen as a quarterback on the field - his helmet was set up for the radio device, allowing him to call plays - he did not provide the kind of big plays the 49ers want to see from their free safety.

Roman went more than two full seasons without recording an interception. Dashon Goldson, a fourth-round pick in the 2007 draft, is slated to take Roman's starting job.
