--Coach Mike Singletary admitted he did not want to trade out of the second round. The 49ers owned the No. 43 pick, but general manager Scot McCloughan decided to send that pick and a fourth-rounder to the Carolina Panthers for their first-round selection in 2010.
Although Singletary was not a fan of the move initially, he said common sense soon prevailed. He said after looking at the players available to the 49ers at No. 43, "it doesn't take a rocket scientist to say, 'Hey, you know what, Scot? That's a heck of a move.'"
--Quarterback Nate Davis said he does not believe there is a big difference between him and the two quarterbacks, Matthew Stafford and Mark Sanchez, taken in the first round of the draft.
"I think the big difference is he (Stafford) went to Georgia and I went to Ball State," Davis said. "Sanchez went to USC, and I went to Ball State. (But) it doesn't matter what round you get drafted in, you just go out there and show yourself."
--In addition to selecting running back Glen Coffee in the third round, the 49ers added undrafted free agent Kory Sheets of Purdue. Sheets clocked a sub-4.4 time at the NFL Combine to establish himself as the fastest back in the draft. However, Sheets went undrafted. The 49ers signed him as a free agent.
--Several weeks ago, the 49ers gave veteran safety Mark Roman permission to seek a trade, as the club penciled in Dashon Goldson as the starter. The 49ers added safety Curtis Taylor of LSU in the seventh round.
Singletary said Roman's future with the club remains uncertain.
"We want Mark to be part of this team," Singletary said. "Maybe he feels he'll need to make a decision or we need to make a decision at some point in time, but we'll see how that shakes out. It's very important for him to know that we do want him here. We see him as a 49er."
QUOTE TO NOTE: "He's the closest thing I've seen to Anquan Boldin in college. He's got excellent hands and he's got the physical attributes to play on the NFL level and make plays. There will be faster guys in the NFL. But he brings a unique quality to play physical and make plays on the NFL level" -- 49ers general manager Scot McCloughan on Michael Crabtree.
