San Francisco 49ers Notes, Quotes 2008-07-31
--Left tackle Joe Staley began training camp on the non-football injury list with an infected foot. The condition was believed to be the result of a bug bite. "It wasn't a brown recluse spider, I'm pretty sure," coach Mike Nolan said.

Staley spent the night in a hospital to receive antibiotics through intravenous fluids.

--Bryant Young, who announced his retirement with the team after last season, has been a visitor at the team's practice facility, though he does not have an official title with the 49ers.

Newcomer Kentwan Balmer, the 49ers' first-round draft pick and a lifelong fan, said it was a thrill meet Young. Balmer spoke with Young when he signed his rookie contract on the eve of training camp.

"He is a polite guy -- great guy," Balmer said. "I didn't know he knew who I was. I wanted to hug him and jump on him, 'That's Bryant Young!' He was a real cool guy. We got a chance to talk and I'm going to talk to him every chance I get."

The space atop Young's empty locker has a nameplate that reads, "For Sale."

Young said he's not going to do a "Brett Favre." He has no intention of returning to play again, but he would like to investigate the possibility of becoming a coach.

--The 49ers and Raiders have agreed to hold two joint practices Monday, Aug. 4, in Napa, where the Raiders hold training camp. The practices will be closed to the general public. The teams open the exhibition season against each other Friday, Aug. 8, in Oakland.

"This is an opportunity to work against some unfamiliar faces," Nolan said. "Players sometimes become comfortable with the level of competition during training camp. This gives us the opportunity to raise that level and learn more about ourselves both individually and collectively."

--Tight end Delanie Walker said he was not upset when defensive end Justin Smith pushed him down during practice, but he also appreciated fellow tight end Vernon Davis going after Smith at the conclusion of the play.

Davis admonished Smith for pushing down a teammate. The two players had to be separated during practice Sunday.

"I felt it a little," Walker said of the push in the back. "Justin was just trying to make a play. He pushed me, then I tripped over Shawntae (Spencer) and that made it look worse that it was."

Walker said of Davis, "It shows that he's got my back, the same way I've got his back."

Afterward, Smith apologized to Walker, saying he didn't mean to push him that hard.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Whatever we end up doing will be because Justin Smith allows us to do that" -- 49ers coach Mike Nolan on whether the 49ers will play a 3-4 or a 4-3 defense.
