San Francisco 49ers Notes, Quotes 2008-10-23
--The 49ers fired offensive line coach George Warhop and promoted Chris Foerster to the position. The 49ers rank last in the NFL with 29 sacks allowed in seven games. The Seahawks recorded eight sacks against the 49ers when the teams met in Week 2.

"Coach Warhop has been a great coach for this O-line and for me in particular," 49ers center Eric Heitmann said. "He's a great coach, great person and friend. He's been my coach here for the last four years. But as an O-line we're going to move forward and get ready for Seattle."

--The 49ers chose Mike Singletary to become the interim head coach over offensive coordinator Mike Martz, the only person on the staff with previous NFL head-coaching experience. When asked about how much input he'll have on offense, Singletary shared an anecdote from Tuesday.

"I went in to talk to him and we were going to talk about a couple things and he said, 'Well, what do you want to talk about? Why do you want to talk about that?'" Singletary said. "But we had fun going through that and I'm enjoying him.

"We had another conversation last night. It's a matter of him and I continuing to get to know each other. ... The bottom line is I have full confidence in Mike Martz and the staff going forward to do whatever they have to do to get it done."

--With Martz as offensive coordinator this season, the 49ers own an explosive - and combustible - offense. The 49ers have shown great improvement in yards per game. However, continuing a trend with Martz's offenses through the years, the 49ers also rank among the worst teams in the league in sacks allowed and turnovers.

Quarterback J.T. O'Sullivan has committed 12 turnovers the past three games - not including a fumble deep in 49ers territory against the New York Giants that resulted in a safety.

--Do the 49ers have enough time to turn around the season? Heitmann believes they do.

"I think everyone on the team feels this isn't the same team we had last year. This is a different team - a much better team," Heitmann said. "This is a team that should not be 2-5. The character on this team will do everything to turn this around, and it starts right now with the Seattle game coming up."

--Former coach Mike Nolan strongly encouraged Singletary to accept the promotion to replace him as coach, Singletary said.

"Before I could say a word, he said, 'I want you to understand something. ... I don't even want you to blink. I want you to take this job because I know that you have the heart of the players at hand, and I know they are important to you. I know that you will be fair to the coaching staff, and I know that you can bring them together.'"

BY THE NUMBERS: 0 - The number of midseason coaching changes in the Super Bowl era that have resulted in teams going to the playoffs.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I think coach Singletary was a great choice to come right in. He kind of shadows what Mike (Nolan) was already teaching -- with a double-scoop of intensity. It'll be somewhat of the same thing we were doing, but maybe the intensity will help the ball bounce our way sometimes in those close games." -- 49ers tackle Jonas Jennings.
