The 49ers gave veteran Mark Roman permission to seek a trade, as the club has decided to anoint third-year player Dashon Goldson as the starter at free safety. However, the 49ers have not held any trade talks concerning Roman. If the 49ers are unable to deal Roman, they expect him to return for training camp and compete for a roster spot.
With the addition of Michael Crabtree, the 49ers have good depth at receiver with Isaac Bruce, Josh Morgan, Brandon Jones, Arnaz Battle, Jason Hill and Dominique Zeigler. Battle, who is in the final year of his contract, could be the odd-man out.
"Nothing is out of the realm, but, no, I don't look to (trade) him," 49ers general manager Scot McCloughan said about Battle. "You want the competition. It will take care of itself and the thing about that position is that you need numbers, and if you feel that you're six or seven deep with good football players, that's a pretty good group."
