PLAYER NOTES

--WR Josh Morgan, who ended the season while playing with a torn groin muscle, said he will take three weeks of rest to allow his injury to heal. Morgan said he believes he can return to the 49ers next season as the No. 1 receiver. Morgan showed plenty of promise as a rookie, but he sustained physical setbacks along the way. Morgan caught 20 passes for 319 yards and three TDs.

--LB Patrick Willis returned the team's practice facility Monday morning and immediately went back to work in the team's weight room. Willis will play in his second Pro Bowl in two seasons. He said he is excited about the future of the 49ers with coach Mike Singletary under contract for four seasons.

--QB Shaun Hill is not sure whether he will head into next season as the team's starter. Hill, who is under contract through 2010, finished the season 5-3 as the team's starter. His passer rating of 87.5 for the season ranked 12th in the NFL and was the best for a 49ers starter since Jeff Garcia posted a 94.8 rating in 2001.

--RB Frank Gore rushed for 58 yards on 11 carries in the 49ers' season finale, but he did not play much in the fourth quarter because his ankle sprain did not allow him to run pass patterns. Gore became the first player in 49ers history to rush for more than 1,000 yards in three consecutive seasons. Gore rushed for 1,036 yards and six touchdowns.

--LB Takeo Spikes, who is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent, began lobbying for his return to the 49ers next season. He said he feels as if he has unfinished business with the 49ers, and it would be a major regret if he could not play at least one more season with the 49ers. Spikes started the final 13 games of the season after earning the starting job at inside linebacker.

REPORT CARD VS. REDSKINS

PASSING OFFENSE: B-plus -- Shaun Hill struggled at times hitting open receivers, but he again played well when it was most important. Hill led the 49ers on a 51-yard drive in the final minute that resulted in the game-winning field goal. Hill threw for 245 yards with one touchdown and one interception and had a passer rating of 91.7. His 21 completions went to nine different receivers, as he did a very good job of spreading the ball around.

RUSHING OFFENSE: B-plus -- Frank Gore and DeShaun Foster shared the duties, and both of them were productive. Gore gained 58 yards on 11 carries while playing with an ankle sprain. Foster added 44 yards on nine rushing attempts with a touchdown. Michael Robinson even got into the act when he converted a third-down rushing attempt.

PASS DEFENSE: B -- The 49ers did not get much pressure on Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell, but the secondary played a solid game against Santana Moss and Antwan Randle El. Those Redskins wideouts combined for just 84 yards receiving on nine receptions. Walt Harris broke up three passes in the 49ers' secondary, and Nate Clements also did a fine job in coverage.

RUSH DEFENSE: A-minus -- There was one stretch in the second quarter when the Redskins did a number on the 49ers with their run game. But the 49ers did a strong job for the balance of the game. Clinton Portis gained 80 yards on 29 rushing attempts for a lowly 2.8 average. The most success the Redskins had on the ground was when Campbell took off on scrambles. He rushed for 39 yards on four rushing attempts.

SPECIAL TEAMS: B-plus -- Kicker Joe Nedney missed a field goal earlier in the game because of Brian Jennings' bad snap. But Jennings and Nedney made amends with a 39-yard field goal on the game's final play. Punter Andy Lee had a 49.7-yard average (47.7 net) on three punts. Return man Allen Rossum had a strong day on kickoff and punt returns to help the 49ers in the field-position game.

COACHING: A -- Offensive coordinator Mike Martz had a strong day. He called all the right shots on the 49ers' final drive that resulted in the game-winning field goal. The 49ers moved the ball 51 yards in the final minute. Defensive coordinator Greg Manusky put the 49ers in position to limit the Redskins' offense throughout the game. With a major assist from the efforts of Martz and Manusky, coach Mike Singletary was retained with a four-year, $10 million contract.
