San Francisco 49ers Strategy and Personnel
With left tackle Joe Staley out with an infected foot and then the person who replaced him initially, Damane Duckett, going down for a few days with a knee injury, the 49ers have moved Barry Sims to the left side with the No. 1 offense. Sims is in competition for the starting right tackle job against Jonas Jennings.

PLAYER NOTES

--LB Brandon Moore, who spent most of the offseason working at the "mike" linebacker position behind Patrick Willis, is now getting an opportunity to compete for the starting "ted" job against Jeff Ulbrich. The "ted" is the strong inside linebacker position.

--WR Isaac Bruce has seen limited practice time, as coach Mike Nolan wants to keep him fresh through training camp. Bruce is also expected to see limited time - if any - during the exhibition season.

--FS Dashon Goldson recorded an interception off Shaun Hill on the second day of camp. He appears to have a chance to unseat incumbent Mark Roman for the starting job.

--G Larry Allen has expressed a desire to play another season, however the 49ers don't appear to have made his re-signing a big priority. Allen is asking for more money than the 49ers are willing to pay at this point.

--LG Adam Snyder is slated to take over as a starter for Larry Allen, who played the past two seasons with the 49ers. Because the 49ers prefer Snyder to start over Allen, who wants to play another season.

BATTLE OF THE WEEK: Alex Smith vs. Shaun Hill for starting QB - It is the competition to watch during training camp. Smith was the No. 1 overall pick in 2005. Hill was an undrafted free agent who has never broken camp as anything other than a No. 3 quarterback. Smith has much better physical tools, while Hill seems to have a better command of the huddle and feel for the game. Still, Smith is considered the favorite to win the job.

OTHER BATTLE FRONTS: Jeff Ulbrich and Brandon Moore are competing for the starting job at the strong inside linebacker position alongside Patrick Willis in the 49ers' 3-4 defense. Parys Haralson and Tully Banta-Cain are in competition for the starting job at weak outside linebacker, the position expected to bring most of the team's pass rush. Tony Wragge and rookie Chilo Rachal are lining up at right guard, as the team has to start making plans in case presumptive starter David Baas is not available early in the season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn pec tendon in April. Also, there figures to competition for the team's No. 3 wideout spot with Arnaz Battle, Jason Hill and Ashley Lelie.

ROOKIE REPORT: All the 49ers' draft picks are signed. DE Kentwan Balmer signed on the eve of camp. He is working with the No. 2 defense at left end, behind Isaac Sopoaga. ... CB Reggie Smith recorded an interception of Shaun Hill during 11-on-11 work on the second day of camp. He is trying to work into the mix as the nickel back. ... RG Chilo Rachal is competing against Tony Wragge, though Wragge appears to have a solid handle based on his experience. ... WR Josh Morgan has gotten off to a strong start during camp. He has seen a lot of action in the teamwork sessions.

INJURY REPORT: G David Baas is not expected back until late in the exhibition season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn pec tendon. He is on PUP, along with NT Aubrayo Franklin (calf). Franklin was expected back after a couple days. LT Joe Staley was placed on non-football injury with an infected foot. WR Ashley Lelie (calf) and OT Damane Duckett (knee) were expected to miss several days.
