As the NFL season crests the halfway point, heartache, anger and discontent fill the autumn air.
Mike copes with V.D. in San Francisco. A fading star is thwarted in Lone Star. A wayward son must leave Kansas. An aggrieved former coach files a grievance. And a "pattern of aggression" emerges in New England.
These are the Sundays of Our Lives.
Singletary Purpose
And for an encore?
In what has to be the most eventful NFL coaching debut in league history, Mike Singletary did everything but slap a shell-shocked soldier in the hospital tent.
Bench the starting quarterback? Check. Banish the former No. 6 overall pick to the locker room? Check. Drop your pants to make a point at halftime in said locker room? Check.
Should be a fun bye week in San Francisco. Do you think Vernon Davis misses Mike Nolan?
Tough-guy-loving purists were thrilled with Singletary's no-nonsense debut, but where can he possibly take it from here? If the new Iron Mike thought Week 8 at home against Seattle was bad, he better brace himself for November.
The Niners play three road games in November against teams (Arizona, Dallas, Buffalo) that are a combined 9-1 at home, outscoring their opponents by 100 points in those 10 games.
If he wants to make a point by the end of that murderous stretch, he'll need to strip fully naked and fight Vernon Davis in the locker room.
Fully Detached Chad
If Barack Obama wins Ohio and it proves decisive in his pursuit of the presidency, he might want to send some special thank-you gifts to the Houston Texans secondary.
According to T.J. Houshmandzadeh, teammate Chad Ocho Cinco was considering breaking out an Obama banner if he scored a touchdown against the Texans on Sunday.
First of all, the Bengals are loathed in Cleveland. Sam Wyche anyone? Second of all, the 0-8 Bengals are probably loathed in Cincinnati. And Chad Ocho Cinco is probably loathed by many in all corners of the state and by some people who love the Bengals.
Chad the Wide Receiver is one endorsement the campaign will happily let slip through its fingers.
