Unheralded Hill keeps Jets grounded
Shaun Hill entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent, he didn't earn his first start until last year, his sixth season in the league, and was told this year in training camp that he wouldn't be competing for the San Francisco 49ers starting job.

You would have never known to see him play against the Jets yesterday.

Hill nimbly danced around in the pocket, keeping several plays alive, and finished the afternoon 28-of-39 for 285 yards and two touchdowns in the 49ers' 24-14 win at Candlestick Park. He was almost perfect managing the San Francisco offense, his lone mistake an interception by David Bowens.

And while Hill has been a bit of a surprise around the NFL - helping the Niners and new coach Mike Singletary win three of their last four games - he wasn't a surprise to Jets nose tackle Kris Jenkins.

"Shaun's a good quarterback," Jenkins said. "I played with Shaun at Maryland. I've known Shaun for a couple of years. If you give Shaun time and room to work, Shaun will pick you apart. I think he's underrated. And now that he's starting to play, he's showing people what he's about."

Much to the Jets' chagrin. The 49ers offense moved the ball from the start, marching to the Jets 26 on their opening drive before Michael Robinson fumbled the ball. No matter. On their next drive, they went 76 yards in eight plays for the game's first touchdown. Hill made a nice play on a second-and-5 at the Jets 7, finding Jason Hill over the middle. Jason Hill fumbled the ball, but lineman Joe Staley recovered in the end zone for the touchdown.

The 49ers' second touchdown was another nice play, with everybody going left ... except Shaun Hill and Frank Gore. Hill found the running back coming out of the backfield to the right for an easy 4-yard scoring pass.

But throwing the ball isn't all he can do. Hill also had a huge 8-yard run for a first down on the drive. He later had a 12-yard run that was called back because of a penalty.

His ability to run - whether for yards or just around the pocket - was a big difference.

"He's good at making the play last longer," Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis said. "He doesn't turn the ball over much. He can extend plays and help them come out in positive ways.

"Once he starts running around, he's actually running around to throw the ball. If he can extend the plays, it definitely makes it harder on us (the defensive backs). We've seen him on film doing it, so there was nothing that we didn't expect."

This fact was particularly disturbing to Jets coach Eric Mangini, who said the team needed to do a better job of containing Hill.

"I'm disappointed when he's able to get out of the pocket against cover-five and get the first down," he said. "You've got to keep him in the pocket. That's what you have to do. It didn't sneak up on us."

San Francisco's offense did. The unit dominated the game, holding the ball for almost 40 minutes (39:49) and running 74 plays to the Jets' 46.

"We wanted to have ball control," 49ers center Eric Heitmann said. "We wanted to be able to run the ball effectively. We knew we were going to have to keep Brett Favre off the field as much as possible. We were successful today because we were able to do that."

And the Jets weren't successful because they weren't able to contain Shaun Hill.
